Southbank Styling Tomorrow - 2023
Event 5 - Aug 2023
I always repeat myself on this subject, as it’s a cause that’s never far from my heart… BUT quite simply, the biggest factor in controlling the worlds fashion waste, is in consciously recycling what we no longer wear.
You may ponder, suggest even… that without customers, where would the Caroline Mosyemi business model be?
It’s true that the role I could only hope for in a world that refuses to buy new clothes, could potentially be marginalised to alterations or customisations, but given my biggest fashion design steer was fuelled by seeing former places I loved, reduced to now serve the role of fashion waste landfill and dump sites, I cannot help but pray for this possible outcome.
It was also during the evening show of this event, that I managed to present to the stage, "Literary Couture"... a dress my young sons inspired and essentially created, while watching their Mum prepare for other shows.
I was thrilled when Michael Burgess asked me to teach up-cycling workshops at London’s Southbank Centre on the Africa in fashion - Styling Tomorrow event that was held on the Clore Ballroom.
Every designer gets a buzz from fashion shows, but being backstage for the majority of these events, means that you don’t actively get to engage with your audience or see how your work or advice influences their own creativity.
The day went amazingly and those who came, some who brought their own clothes for embellishment and up cycling... all fully engaged and immersed themselves into learning how to bring new life to textile gems and old raggedy clothes that might have otherwise ended up carelessly tossed in bins, or forever consigned to the bottom of closets.
I am so unbelievably grateful to have been part of this exciting event and am continually looking into how I can implement similar workshops locally.
For those who attended and indeed anyone else wanting to share intel on the subject or collaborate, keep me updated on my socials with what you guys, are doing up cycling wise!
